TECHNICAL BULLETIN: SCORING

The NYPA Midget Association wishes to clarify scoring procedures as they pertain to transponders and the MyLaps system. Our goal is to have state of the art scoring for our racers and we hope you can all understand that we are doing our best to learn the new technology. With that said, we desperately need all drivers and teams cooperate for our efforts to matter.  Please read the reminders and explanations below for a better understanding our scoring procedures and please contact us directly with questions and concerns.

Everyone Wants Accurate Race Results!

There are many reasons why electronic scoring can show different results than what showed on the track such as a lack of transponder on the car, not declaring when you have changed transponders, transponder not being charged, and in rare instances they can be damaged in a crash. Also there are normal racing situations, such as multiple restarts without completing a lap (we go back to the last completed lap), passing before the green comes out (middle/back of the pack), or passing when the yellow flag comes out or while under a yellow condition.

Timing System User Error

Errors can occur when entering racer information too quickly or slowly in systems with flags(human response time)…Purple, Green, Yellow, Red, Checkered, or the stop button. Think of 18 cars at Chapel Hill Raceway doing between 9 and 11 seconds laps with multiple cautions and false starts! It was very challenging.

Transponders

When the transponder passes over the loop embedded in the race track’s start/finish line. The signal is picked up and relayed to the decoder that identifies that transponder number, registers the passing time, and THEN sends this data to the NYPA laptop computer which processes the signals. The system is accurate to one-thousandth of a second! Electronic transponder timing systems are virtually 100% accurate and when used properly it eliminates the possibility of scoring errors. The whole purpose of NYPA Midgets using the MyLaps system is to eliminate disputes and misunderstandings among the drivers and to provide accurate NYPA Midget race results.
