Wollaber Earns His First Victory Of The 2018 Season At Lancaster National Speedway
Lancaster, NY, July 7th, 2018- An action-packed feature at Lancaster National Speedway saw 19 Jerry Gradl NYPA Midgets take to the track. Taking advantage of a mechanical failure on race leader Kyle Hutchinson’s car, Dave Wollaber took home his first win of the season after many close calls. Wollaber’s win combined with his outstanding consistency this year could be they key to success in his championship hunt.
Kyle Hutchinson winner of the first heat, made quick work of the field early on, taking advantage of a few cautions en route to victory. The action continued into the next heat, with Chad Haywood taking the checkers after a hard fought battle with the hard-charging Vinnie Christiano. Christiano made several attempts to the inside late in the heat, but Haywood managed to hold his ground long enough to score the win.
The feature saw Patrick Smith leading the field to green, Smith would fall back to fifth after the first lap, with Haywood maneuvering to an early lead. Contact between Tim Nies and Arik McGruder brought out the first caution on lap 2. Kyle Hutchinson, restarting in third, had a great restart enabling him to power past both Mark Schulz and Chad Haywood for the lead. That is until the caution flew resulting from a spin by Haywood and subsequently bunching the field back together for the restart.
Throughout the race Wollaber, who started ninth, was able to take his time saving his tires and steadily moving his way up to restart fifth when the green dropped again. Andy Nye quickly jumped into second place, but that was short lived as he drove deep into 3 allowing Wollaber to take the second spot from him. Hutchinson, was able to keep a safe distance between himself and Wollaber while under green flag conditions. The lap 9 restart saw a multi car pile up that collected several drivers, that would mark the final caution of the race.
Hutchinson and Wollaber, managed to separate themselves from the rest of the field leaving Andy Nye, Andy Jankowiak, and AJ Hessler in a close battle for third. As the top two continued to pull away from the field, it appeared Wollaber didn’t seem to have quite enough speed to close the gap, and by all appearances Hutchinson was on his way to a another feature win, until the closing laps when he pulled off the racing surface with a mechanical issue. Hutchinson later stated that it was a problem with the throttle body actuator, making this the second time a mechanical problem took him out of a race this year. Seizing the opportunity, Wollaber stormed into the lead. Never looking back, visiting Victory Lane for the first time this season.
So far in 2018 competition, Dave Wollaber’s consistency has prevailed over Kyle Hutchinson’s win tally. Despite winning only one race so far, Wollaber’s ability to have consistent runner-up and top five finishes has kept him ahead in the points race. With eleven races remaining in the season, Hutchinson will have his work cut out for him if he wants to defend his NYPA Midgets title, and the pressure will be on for Wollaber to continue his consistency for the remainder of the year.
