Holmes Dominates Again, Scores Back-To-Back Wins At NYIRP
Lancaster, New York, August 25th, 2019- Bobby Holmes continued his winning ways during last Saturday night’s Jerry Gradl Motors NYPA Midget Association race at New York International Raceway Park. Taking advantage of an outside pole starting position, Holmes jumped to the lead on the start in what eventually turned into a repeat of the last race.
Holmes started the evening strong with a heat win, and was no doubt ready to continue his momentum from last week into the evening. Kyle Hutchinson rebounded during his week after a heart-wrenching 19th place finish last race, and took the win in his heat as well.
Both drivers started the feature race towards the front, with Holmes in second and Hutchinson two rows back in sixth. Holmes pounced into the lead on the start by passing Jim Musto going into turn one and began to pull away from the field. However, a pileup in turn three brought out the caution, eliminating the gap he made from the start.
After a quick cleanup, Hutchinson, Dave Wollaber, and Andy Nye jumped to second, third, and fourth respectively on the restart and quickly got in line to catch the leader. The top four began to pull away from the rest of the field, but you could throw a blanket over them with how close together they stuck. Everything seemed orderly towards the front until they caught lap traffic around lap six. The unpredictable lines that some drivers took during the chaos added some drama to the battle up front, with Wollaber taking advantage and finding second place through the fracas.
Wollaber began to work his way towards Holmes, and caught him just before the halfway point of the race. He began to make a pass for the lead, but the duo got too close for comfort and Wollaber backed out to avoid a collision. Wollaber kept it together and got back up to speed, but fell back to fourth- a temporary setback as he re-passed Nye for third.
The lap traffic continued to pose a challenge for Holmes trying to outrun his competition, and things came to a head when Kevin Wilson flipped his car right in front of the leaders. Hutchinson and Wollaber narrowly avoided Wilson’s out of control racecar as he tumbled through the grass, bringing out the second and final caution. Wilson was tended to by the safety team and was able to escape his car without any injuries.
A lengthy delay ensued as Wilson’s car and debris were removed from the track, but Holmes didn’t lose any of his charm during the cleanup, holding off a charging Nye on the restart. Nye saw an opportunity to take the lead on the outside, but ultimately couldn’t make the move stick. Meanwhile, Wollaber worked to wear down Hutchinson as Holmes pulled away. Wollaber had the faster car on entry and center, but struggled to find a way around his opposition and decided to wait for an opportunity to present itself. With one lap to go, Wollaber’s prayers were answered as Hutchinson pushed up the track coming to the white flag, allowing him to cut underneath and take second on the last lap. Holmes cruised across the line for his second consecutive win, while Wollaber, Hutchinson, Nye, and Erik Musto rounded out the top five.
While Holmes has the most wins so far this season, the championship still looks to be in the favor of Wollaber. So far, Wollaber has finished no lower than second place compared to Holmes’ sixth and eleventh prior to his wins. Meanwhile, Hutchinson has a points deficit resulting from his 19th place finish last week; surmounting it will prove to be an incredibly difficult task. Consistency seems to be the winning strategy here, but with one race remaining in the season, anything can happen.
